Judgement-Free Zone
Buckeye Community School’s culture is full of inclusivity and respect for all.
High school CAN be a place filled with belonging, deep friendships, and unending support. At Buckeye Community School (BCS), we create the type of community where we welcome all, honor our differences as strengths, and break the old molds to build new ways forward together. We hold everyone in positive regard, meet each other with open minds, and are truly supportive of every individual.
BCS is a Judgement-Free zone. No matter what your life experience has been, how many times school has failed you or your life has taken a turn you didn’t expect, you are welcome here. In fact, we built BCS specifically for you. We keep enrollment open year round, welcoming all high school students up to age twenty-one.
What is a Judgement-free Zone?
The dictionary defines “non-judgemental” as: tending not to judge other people harshly or unfairly: not too critical of other people. For many, this is the opposite of their life experience, but at Buckeye Community School, it is our way of life. We do not judge others as good or bad, worthy or unworthy, dignified or undignified. BCS culture is full of inclusivity and respect for all.
We accept people for who they are and presume positive intent. Everyone is doing the best they can with what they have, and so we remain open-minded. Everyone experiences misunderstandings, but at BCS, we slow down and do the work it takes to connect, understand, and move forward together in a good way.
Social Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health
In this fast-paced, accomplishment-driven modern world, BCS is a safe haven. We teach excellent academics alongside important life skills, and this makes a big difference. One of the greatest ways to accomplish dreams is to find the right people to partner with and support you. Our judgement-free schools are the absolute best place for you to get a fresh start, surrounded by accepting and friendly people who are dedicated to supporting you on all levels.
Being non-judgemental can take a good amount of personal awareness and commitment. One of the first steps is to practice listening while not trying to fix the situation or come up with solutions. Here are a few tips that the Mental Health First Aid organization shares in order to be an effective non-judgemental listener, and you will find that everyone on the BCS team practices these skills every day, with every student:
Reflect on your own state of mind. Are you feeling calm, open, and ready to listen?
Adopt an attitude of acceptance, genuineness, and empathy. We all have differences. Can you put yourself in the other person’s shoes?
Use verbal skills to show that you’re listening. Give the other person the time to express themselves, use minimal prompts like “ah” or “I see” and ask simple questions.
Maintain positive body language. You can show that you care by maintaining comfortable eye contact and an open body position (not crossing your arms).
Recognize cultural differences. Our backgrounds shape how we think and act. Check in to see how much personal space your friend may need, or how much eye contact is comfortable for them. Honor your differences and it will be easier to be non-judgemental.
