Career Tech: Construction Means High Paying Jobs

Many of the exceptional opportunities we create for our students at Buckeye Community School (BCS) are found in our Career Tech programs. By enrolling at BCS, students gain access to a treasure trove of choices including the ability to train for high paying jobs. Our Career Tech classes are filled with specialized instruction from qualified professionals, amplifying students' access to excellent jobs.

Every class at Buckeye is tuition-free and available to all students at our public high school. We have three convenient locations in Marion, Mansfield, and London, and we stay flexible to work with any schedule. Students who choose a Career Tech focus receive industry level training and earn certifications that launch high paying careers right out of high school!

Construction Labs at School

This year we launched another greatly anticipated training program at all three Buckeye locations - Career Tech: Construction! In partnership with Adena Corporation and funded by a spectacular Innovative Workforce Incentive Program Grant (IWIP Grant), we are pleased to announce our new Construction Labs are open and accepting students.

With our new Construction Labs up and running, we are partnering with the Associated Builders and Contractor’s Central Ohio Chapter to provide instruction from experienced professionals. Our facilities give students access to every tool involved in rough and finishing carpentry on a construction site. Students are trained and tested to meet standard safety requirements and then we all head to the labs. Every day we use table saws, band saws and everything needed to frame buildings, put in floors and cabinetry, then complete finishing touches like molding and trim work. Buckeye students learn hands-on from top-level teachers and develop valuable relationships which elevate students’ futures.

Did You Say Forklift Simulator?

In our BCS Construction Labs, we installed Forklift simulators to safely train students in the art of operating heavy machinery - starting with a forklift. Individuals with large machinery operator certificates are in high demand nationwide. Simulators are key for beginning large machinery training because of the dangers involved in moving massive, heavy and awkward objects. This training is the foundation that sets individuals up for working in any kind of warehouse. In addition, certifying as a forklift operator is the key that opens doors for more complex large machinery operator training and advancement on construction site jobs.

Nationally Recognized Certifications

At BCS, we make the leap from school into the workforce as easy as possible, giving our Career Tech Construction students the opportunity to earn nationally recognized certifications. Students who complete NCCER credentials can earn credit toward their adult apprenticeship work at programs such as ABC Central Ohio’s and other apprenticeships and journeyman trades. Earning industry recognized credentials makes individuals more desirable to employers and leverages a higher wage!

Everyone enrolled in Career Tech Construction studies for the OSHA-30 certificate. This training is part of the required pre-apprenticeship hours and creates a foundation of knowledge critical for workplace safety.

Another requirement for entering the construction industry is a certification from The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). In order to get accepted into an apprenticeship program, a NCCER - level 2 certification is needed. That’s why Buckeye partners with industry experts to bring this training and the opportunities it provides to our Career Tech students.

Jobs Available in All 50 States

Jobs in construction can take individuals anywhere imaginable. Earning industry-recognized credentials and connecting with the professional partners we have cultivated at Buckeye opens up a direct path to apply for a variety of construction trades jobs.

Our partner Adena Corporation is a major employer in Ohio for the construction trade. Building everything from schools to roller coasters, the expertise and deep industry knowledge accessed through this partnership is invaluable to Buckeye students. ABC Central of Ohio is part of a nation-wide construction company network, reminding us that jobs in the construction trades reach to all 50 states and beyond.

Construction companies in Ohio and across the nation are happy to hire our well trained students aged 18 or older. As a safety-first industry, construction trades hold this age requirement in order for all individuals to qualify for insurance.
