Demonstrated Mastery Model
At Buckeye Community School (BCS), we are known for doing things differently than a traditional high school. As a free public school, we exist to help students not being served well by traditional high schools; we help students find their own way and earn a high school diploma, therefore setting them up for future success. BCS serves students ages 14-21 in mid- and central-Ohio, with locations in Mansfield, Marion, and London.
Being an alternative school with a lot of flexibility may seem like we’re giving our students an easy ride, but that’s not the case. We meet everyone where they are and design Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) that take into account the student’s learning style, life circumstances, and personal goals.
What is Demonstrated Mastery?
At BCS, demonstrated mastery means that every student must turn in every assignment and pass their exams with at least a 75% - we want to make sure our students understand the material and can demonstrate that. The cool part is that you can retake exams until you do pass with 75% or higher, showing that you understand the materials and are ready to move on.
Providing the support you need and then sticking with you till you get it is what our Demonstrated Mastery Model is all about. Whether you choose to take 1 class at a time, or sign up for a full semester of classes, we know you can learn and master the content. You also have to turn in all assignments to pass each class. No missing assignments are allowed -- we’re here for you and we know you can accomplish what you set out to do.
Holding High Standards
What would you do with the best people in the world cheering you on? What if those people knew all about your life and absolutely still believed in your ability to do great things?
We know every life is different, and at BCS, we have designed personalization and flexibility into our educational model to meet people where they are at. This approach gives us the ability to ask for more - by providing more. BCS students are held to higher standards than typical high schoolers and given the option to continue working at content until they master it. Requiring 75% or better on exams and assignments is a little out of the normal US educational model, and so is designing each student’s high school experience to best suit the student. But it’s a proven model that delivers diplomas and that’s why we do it!
